The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
To Say I’m shocked I read this book was an understatement. I’m a huge fan of Mel, seriously. Most of my conversations start with either, “What is it with toddlers and…..” OR “When I was listening to Mel Robbins podcast…”. Because of this, I felt like I already knew the infamous “5 second rule” pretty well. Not only have I listened to her teach and preach about it, I’ve seen her twice as a keynote speaking to it. And here’s the thing, I was able to talk myself out of the 5 second rule by number 3. I’d just say, “meh” in my head, stop coutning, turn off the alarm and go back to bed. However, there was a voice in my head that kept pestering me every time I heard Mel mention her 5 second rule, “You know you’ll learn something if you pick it up!” And so, after being fed up with myself for not getting my booty out of bed, I knew at this point I had nothing to lose and only even more perspective to gain.
My top takeaways from this book highlight its transformative insights and practical strategies. First, you’ll discover new perspectives and actionable tweaks, even for habits you think you’ve already mastered. Mel Robbins is a powerhouse of research-backed motivation, diving deep into the science behind the “why” and “how” of behavior change. She’s truly the G.O.A.T. of motivation (though she’d probably credit Nike with that title, backed by research!). I thought I had outsmarted her famous 5-Second Rule, but once I understood the data and science behind it, I was hooked. Whether you start at “5” or jump straight to “Blast off,” this method is a game-changer for building or breaking habits. If you’re looking for a proven way to take control of your habits and your life, turn to Mel Robbins.
